IGP Pujith Jayasundara & Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando were arrested by the CID on the 2nd of July 2019, as respondents of the Easter Sunday bomb attacks as there was “sufficient” evidence against them.
But, yesterday July 09th of 2019 the Chief Magistrate granted bail to both the IGP & Former Defence Secretary on a surety of Rs. 500,000 each citing that “insufficient” evidence has not been presented to prove the charges including aiding and abetting in committing manslaughter. Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne stated that the CID has not even obtained statements from the suspects as should be done, when they are alleged of murder. She also went on further to state that the State Intelligence had failed to mention any imminent threat in his letters to the suspects, so how could the suspects act on unconfirmed intelligence?
Touching on the fact, that the Intelligence Chief had informed the suspects about the attacks via Whatsapp at 8.46am on the 21st of April 2019. Even though the relevant messages were received by the suspects the first bomb blast had already taken place, and submissions made by the suspects’ legal council make it evident that the suspects paid attention to the matter at hand. Although the suspects didn’t take the necessary action against the terror attacks, there is no sufficient evidence to prove that murders were committed.
The Barrister, clearly stated that the President and the present government is to be blamed for the negligence of the bomb attacks that took place on Easter Sunday.
Is this just a facade once again, because they are just months away from facing the polls and returning back home for being the worst ever performing government in the Sri Lankan history? National security and the lives of the citizens of the country has become nothing but a joke to the President and the UNP government. Nothing but a blame game is going on within the UNP government, state officials and President regarding who is to take responsibility for the negligence of the bomb blasts that took place on the 21st of April.
