Garbage. An issue Sri Lanka has been having over the past few years. This has become nothing but a menace throughout the country. Every 100 yards there was a disposal of garbage to be seen.
Actions that was supposed to be taken against this menace such as cleaning of roads, collection of garbage, drainage systems weren’t cleaned which would close blockages within.This was the rightful duties of the municipal councils.
Regarding a statement Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa gave during an interview, he states that he has had discussions with the Municipal Councils regarding this issue, and they had mentioned that this duty eradicate this menace were given to different organizations with a payment and through a tender notice to implement the necessary actions.
But, since there wasn’t anyone to supervise them the duty or work that was supposed to be done by them didn’t happen.
Due to the fact that Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa got together with theSri Lanka Police and formed a group of Environmental Officers, that were given a knowledge about the environment so that they can guide or instruct the organizations on how to carry out the duties provided to them.
This was a success as the Police Officers did a emence job around Colombo to make this a success.
But with this project in process, another problem was raised up. Where would the disposal of the garbage collected islandwide be? Kolonnawa, Meethotamulla and such places were used as the places of disposal, which later on became a problem to the public in surrounding areas and due this caused disputes in those areas.
For years and years, no one has taken an action or done such an investigation regarding this problem or even suggested solutions to get rid of this menace.
All these years disposal of garbage was done in the lowlands. And when such disposal is done the clean water in the lowlands gets polluted, the environment was polluted etc. So, the first action was taken against this problem was to stop dumping garbage in lowlands and remove the garbage that had been dumped throughout the years.
A research was then done in order to find a solution on how to destroy this garbage. And through this research a solution was found in order to destroy this garbage.
But even though this preparation was made, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa wasn’t available to implement this plan because of the 2014 budget that took place.
Up to now no such action was taken against this problem.
