Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has objected to a Cabinet paper presented by the Power and Energy Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
The Cabinet paper had been submitted to the Treasury to allocate an amount of Rs. 364 million to move the Ministry of Power and Energy to a new building.
At present the Ministry is being operated in a building owned by the Ceylon Workers Congress, which is a space of 19800 square feet. The ministry pays a monthly rent of Rs. 74 per square foot.
But it has been proposed to move to the new building on Navam Mawatha with a monthly rent of Rs. 260 per square foot for a 44,000 square foot space.
In order to obtain this building, an amount of Rs. 138 million for a one year guarantee, an amount of Rs. 206 million to pay five months of rent and an amount of Rs. 20 million for the construction of the inside of the building which is the total of Rs. 364 million was requested from the Treasury.
