Everyone in the government these days are saying that they have not stopped the development of Sri Lanka in any way, but almost all development projects have failed or been halted. Out of those development projects, the work on the Beliatta Expressway has been stopped. The Chinese company that was in charge of the construction of the Matara-Hambantota Expressway has withdrawn from that particular construction. The Chinese company has taken this decision after the Sri Lankan government defaulted on its payment of $ 80 million for a period of 10 months. All construction work on the Southern Expressway from Matara to Beliatta has been stopped and over 1,500 employees have returned due to the halt in the construction work. It is said that work on the Matara-Beliatta Division commenced in the year 2015 and is scheduled to be completed on 29th November. The major contracting companies say that 90% of the work has been completed by working day and night as work must be completed in time.
In addition, from a subcontractor company, subcontractors are working on the project. They all have supported this trade union action but prior to taking this action, CATIC representatives had held several rounds of discussions with the local government authorities on the issues, but no payments have been made. Later the company had agreed to suspend construction until the next parliamentary meeting, till the issue is discussed and resolved. Projects that have been carried out by the government have already been stopped. However, this present government states that they will not halt but continue all development projects. Through these development projects many job opportunities will be created for many who are unemployed. However, when these development projects fall short, the country's development will be reduced and unemployment will rise.
They all come forward in order to build a beautiful Sri Lanka. But by what the government is doing, isn't the country taking more steps back rather than achieving the goal of a developed Nation?
